The Whidbey Island Marathon has been recognized for its magical views as one of the Top 10 places in the world to run a marathon! Lonely Planet Magazine has an article out now titled Top 10 Places to Run a Marathon. The Whidbey Island Marathon is held every year in April (the same month as the nearby Skagit Valley Tulip Festival & a few weeks before Oak Harbor’s Holland Happenings Celebration). The course typically runs from Deception Pass Bridge, southbound through Oak Harbor to Windjammer Park, and down to Penn Cove. For 2011 the races will take place on April 9th & 10th, and the race routes can be viewed here. Here is a little about what Lonely Planet says about Whidbey Island: “The USA’s Pacific Northwest is one of the country’s most beautiful regions, and Whidbey Island in Puget Sound is a wonderful place to run a marathon. The scenery inspires at every turn, with a backdrop of snowcapped mountains, old-growth forest and rocky shores…” and here is the full article from Lonely Planet.
